I recently went to a birthday celebration for an old friend and was blown away by the incredible transformation she had made to her backyard. The sliding glass doors off the living room had previously opened up to a vast, yet empty, outdoor area. Don’t get me wrong, the old plastic table and chairs and coolers made for some great memories but this time when I walked out the doors, I was suddenly in a high-end resort! I insisted that she give me all the details of the makeover. First, I wanted a tour of the new space.
They had decided to skip their spring break vacation and invest in building a luxury outdoor patio so they could both entertain and relax every day of the year. They extended the living room area by continuing the space directly outside the glass doors allowing guests to move in and out of the house. By building out a long overhang, they could use the space no matter what the weather was. Then she added sheer white outdoor curtains which could be opened or closed, which instantly provided the right touch of elegance. Her husband’s “must-have” hanging flat screen TV also made this the new neighborhood hangout so they needed multiple outdoor seating areas to sit and/or serve.
She made sure to leave a decent amount of space on the side deck for the pool chaise loungers. With an over-sized umbrella between the chaise that tilts so you can block out the sun no matter the time of day. My friend assured me that this was the perfect spot for us to cocktail and catch up. At the far end they installed a full outdoor kitchen including island counter, built-in grill, refrigerator and prep area with a sink. The perfect setup for outdoor entertaining.
Then, she gave me a quick synopsis of what she had gone through with the contractor and landscaper. But she knew I was only interested in the exquisite patio furniture that would fill her new outdoor living space. Stopping mid sentence to greet guests, I told her I would grab a drink and meet her back on the chaises to hear all about how she turned her backyard into a luxury resort.
I can’t wait to hear all about how to decorate for a luxurious backyard resort. As I walked through her new luxury outdoor living space, I was jealous for not thinking of it first!
